Maggie Mahar discusses Don Berwick and patient-centered care in this post on HealthBeat.com.  The blog discusses an article by Ezra Klein which appeared in The Washington Post, in which Klein labels Berwick as a conservative.  Klein’s article refers to a Health Affairs article written by Berwick, “What Patient-Centered Should Mean:  Confessions of an Extremist.” Mahar clarifies that in his article, Berwick presents “a mature dialogue” between doctor and patient, which may result in the doctor acceding to the patient’s wishes, or vice versa.  The key ingredient is “shared decision-making,” with the physician ultimately respecting the patient’s wishes.  Berwick also argues that government should offer guidelines, not rules in patient care.  In this way, Berwick promotes a patient-centered medicine that helps both patient and physician in that it promotes both dignity and humanity.
